A healthy diet contains a lot of amino acids, vitamin C, and omega-3. But how beneficial are all these substances for the heart? A new meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology sheds more light.
The new study analyzed a total of 884 scientific papers that studied trace elements taken as dietary supplements.
More than 883,000 people participated in the studies related to these scientific papers.
Experts found compelling evidence that some supplements are beneficial for heart health. For example, these are omega-3 (reduces mortality from cardiovascular diseases), folic acid (reduces the likelihood of stroke), coenzyme Q10 (reduces the risk of death from all causes).
In addition, magnesium, omega-6, L-arginine, L-citrulline, vitamin D, zinc, alpha-lipoic acid, melatonin, catechin, curcumin, flavanol, genistein, quercetin help reduce the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases.
However, dietary supplements with beta-carotene increased the risk of death from all causes.
