“Dizziness” is a tracing paper: how to correctly translate the word into Ukrainian

< b>In modern speech, you can often notice the influence of the Russian language, which leads to the appearance of surzhyk – an artificial fusion of Ukrainian and Russian vocabulary. One of the most revealing examples of this phenomenon is the word “vertigo”. Although it is widely used, it is not actually normative.

The use of such Russian words as “dizziness” indicates insufficient command of the Ukrainian language. The Ukrainian language has its own counterpart, which more accurately conveys the meaning of this concept.

What is “dizziness”?

It is a tracing of the Russian word “dizziness”. It usually describes a state when a person feels weak, unstable and loses balance, and the surrounding world seems to revolve around him.

In the Ukrainian language, there is a more accurate equivalent for describing this state – “dizziness”. It means clouding of consciousness, loss of ability to clearly perceive reality, understand and think. This word is not only more correct, but also carries a deeper meaning. It comes from the Ukrainian word “паморока”, which means fog.

The term “dizziness” is often used as a synonym for the Latin word “vertigo”, but there are certain differences between them, despite the fact that both define a disturbance of work vestibular apparatus. Dizziness usually describes a feeling of loss of balance, while vertigo is characterized by a false sense of movement—it seems as if the person is moving in space or that other objects are spinning around them.
