It became known that a healthy lifestyle and, in particular, proper nutrition are associated with a slower deterioration of memory in a person.
Scientists discovered , that even in carriers of the apolipoprotein E (AROE) gene, that is, the strongest risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and dementia, a healthy lifestyle slows down memory loss.
In the course of the study, experts studied the data of 29,000 adults aged 60 years and older (average age – 72 years, 49% – women) with normal thinking functions. These people participated in the Chinese Cognition and Aging Study.
Each healthy lifestyle factor was found to be associated with slower-than-average memory decline over 10 years. A healthy diet had the strongest effect on this, followed by cognitive activity and physical exercise.
People with a favorable or neutral lifestyle had a 90% and almost 30% lower risk of developing dementia or mild thinking disorders, respectively, than , who led an unhealthy lifestyle.
