Doctor names heart disease and cancer as causes of prolonged cough

The doctor listed the pathological causes of a prolonged cough in an interview.

When asked what can cause a person to have a persistent cough, the doctor noted that most often it is associated with diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs.

“The cause may be an infection or allergy,” the specialist said.

The doctor also named cancer among the possible causes of a prolonged cough.

“A prolonged cough can be a symptom of the development of oncological disease of the bronchi or lungs due to smoking”.

The specialist clarified that this type of cough worsens after waking up in the morning.
In addition, he shared, a person who constantly coughs may have heart disease. For example, heart failure contributes to the development of pulmonary hypertension, blood stagnation in the lungs. Coughing becomes a consequence of this unfavorable process.

Another possible cause of a cough that does not go away for a long time is pathologies affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Often, such a pathology is gastroesophageal reflux, in which the acidic contents of the stomach are thrown into the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract, esophagus or throat.

The doctor drew attention to the fact that there is also a psychological cough, when examinations do not reveal a physical cause. For example, a person may experience a cough during moments of nervous tension, but for some reason doctors may not understand.
