Doctors named five things that should not be done immediately after waking up

Waking up “on the wrong side of the bed” can easily kill the mood for the whole day. A few rules and observance of a certain morning ritual will help to make it more productive and reduce the stress level.

Press the “snooze” button on the alarm clock

Send more time in bed a few minutes before finally waking up is always nice, but the snooze button can do more harm than good. Sleep, which envelops the brain for five to ten minutes, does not restore strength and can make the body even more sleepy.

“Most of the last part of our sleep phase consists of REM sleep, which is considered restorative sleep. So if you press the redo button, you're breaking that process,” explained Dr. Reena Mehra. The expert advised to set the alarm for a time when it is easier to wake up and to avoid the snooze function, so that after waking up you feel rested.

Sleep in the “ball” position

For some, sleeping in the “ball” position is the norm, but doctors advise to stretch well after waking up. This will increase blood flow, due to which the body will get the necessary energy and allow you to get out of bed energetically.

Check email

Sleep Advisor surveyed 1,000 people and found that that 17% of them first check email on their smartphone in the morning. However, scientists claim that such a habit increases the level of stress and can negatively affect mood during the day. Experts advise first to give yourself time to wake up.

Drink coffee

For many, coffee is primarily a motivator to get out of bed. But if someone wakes up very early, it is better to wait before cooking it. Caffeine is known to affect the production of cortisol in the body, which is also called the stress hormone. According to a study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, there are three spikes in cortisol during the day. Drinking coffee before 10 o'clock in the morning can make caffeine ineffective and disrupt the production of this hormone. Experts recommend waiting a little before taking the first sip of coffee.

Stay in bed

The bed should be a “sanctuary” intended exclusively for sleep. If you wake up in the morning and stay in bed for a while, you can confuse the brain, which will begin to perceive it as a place of wakefulness. As a result, problems due to insomnia may arise in the future. If you still want to relax after waking up, it is better to move to your favorite sofa, doctors advised.
