American scientists decided to finally establish , whether the 10,000 steps a day recommended by various experts are really so useful for our health. However, it turned out that these numbers were taken from the head.
Many experts from different countries of the world have been saying for years how important it is to take 10,000 steps a day, and what benefits it brings to health. Under the banner of these recommendations, sales of pedometers and other electronic devices that count the number of steps taken during the day like smart watches are constantly increasing in the world.
It is natural that physical activity is good for our health, and 10,000 steps per day is a realistic task. But the problem is that this recommendation appeared practically out of thin air – there is no authoritative scientific research behind it. Moreover, for the first time this number appeared at all thanks to an advertisement carried out by a Japanese marketing company for the sale of… pedometers.
As for scientists, they have no idea how many steps should be taken every day for strengthening of health. Researchers from the University of Massachusetts decided to get an answer to this question and conducted their own experiments, during which they observed 2,110 middle-aged adults who wore fitness devices with pedometers over the next 11 years.
As they should. was to be expected, no special benefits were obtained from 10,000 steps per day, except for additional health benefits from the general level of sports. But 7,000 steps a day had this effect, reducing the probability of premature death by 50-70%. It is 7,000 steps per day that are desirable for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, according to researchers.
