Does milk help with stomach aches?

The doctor warns that milk should not be taken as a remedy for stomach discomfort – even if it helps, the effect is still short-lived.

There is an opinion that drinking milk relieves stomach pain, as it neutralizes stomach acid, which provokes irritation of its mucous membranes and their damage. A sports doctor explained how correct this is.

According to the specialist, “drinking milk can only relieve stomach pain for a few hours.”

The doctor explained that milk is a weakly acidic product with a lower acidity compared to gastric juice. Therefore, it was long believed that drinking milk neutralizes the acid of the stomach contents.

But scientists have found that the acid-neutralizing effect of milk is temporary.

“The milky film on the walls of the stomach delays the action of acid, but studies show that milk also stimulates the secretion of gastric juice,” the doctor said.

Thus, the doctor added, although milk may provide relief, the painful sensations in the stomach will most likely reappear later.
