Drinking more than two servings of alcohol per day leads to severe hypertension

Cutting down on alcohol if you usually drink two or more drinks a day can lower your blood pressure.

If your blood pressure gets too high, it can put extra strain on your organs. And if left untreated, it can lead to serious conditions such as heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes.

Some of the most common causes of high blood pressure include being overweight, eating too much salt, and not getting enough exercise.

Drinking too much alcohol can contribute to high blood pressure, or hypertension. It can raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels. More than three alcoholic drinks a day can temporarily raise your blood pressure, but regular drinking can lead to long-term elevations. If you drink alcohol, start cutting back to no more than two drinks a day for men and no more than one drink a day for women.

In people who drank two or fewer drinks a day, reducing alcohol consumption was not associated with a significant reduction in blood pressure; however, in people who drank more than two drinks per day, reducing alcohol consumption was associated with greater reductions in blood pressure.
