Drinks have been identified that increase the risk of several types of cancer

Studies involving more than 100,000 of people showed that diet drinks with artificial sweeteners increase the risk of certain types of cancer.

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and others are not considered very healthy, but are generally classified as harmless. But, judging by the results of a new study by scientists from the Sorbonne, they should not be considered harmless after all. The authors of the study concluded that “active consumption of sweeteners or diet drinks increases the risk of developing cancer by 13% – especially breast, colon and prostate cancer”.

French scientists analyzed the data of 102,865 adult women and men, participants of the NutriNet Santé research project on the relationship between nutrition and health. Specialists studied the peculiarities of the test subjects' diet and compared them with data on the state of health and medical records of people over an 8-year period.

Scientists found that those participants who consumed a greater amount of artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame and acesulfame-K), the risk of developing cancer was 13% higher than in those who did not use them. First of all, there was an increased risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.

“Aspartame and acesulfame-K are the most commonly used sweeteners in diet drinks, such as diet cola or low-calorie energy drinks.”

According to scientific experts, when the body digests aspartame, formaldehyde is produced as a byproduct. This substance can accumulate in cells and make them cancerous. The human body has a genetic mechanism that causes defective cells to self-destruct. Researchers suspect that aspartame and its byproduct formaldehyde disable this mechanism, which allows cancer cells to grow unhindered.
