Dry eyes can indicate an incurable brain disease

Dry eyes are one of the symptoms of incurable neurodegenerative pathology – Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is an incurable brain disease characterized by the loss of nerve cells in its area responsible for dopamine production. This chemical acts as a mediator between parts of the brain and nervous system involved in the control and coordination of motor functions.

The death or damage of nerve cells in Parkinsonism means a decrease in the amount of dopamine in the brain, which is reflected in the work of various parts of the body. A sign that may indicate such a disorder is a decrease in the frequency of blinking, which leads to dry eyes. This was reported by specialists of the Parkinson's Foundation (Great Britain).

“The symptoms of Parkinson's disease, as a rule, develop gradually and initially seem insignificant. One of these warning signs of the disease is some changes in the eyes, including a decrease in the intensity of blinking, which causes the problem of dry eyes,” quotes representatives of the Foundation.

According to experts, on average, a person blinks up to 20 times per minute. In the case of the development of Parkinson's disease, this happens much less often. Regular blinking contributes to the distribution of tear fluid on the surface of the eye, forming a moisturizing, lubricating and protective film on it. When it becomes rarer, the eyes are moistened much worse – this causes an unpleasant condition of dry eyes, accompanied by the feeling that sand has fallen into them.

“There is no established limit on how often patients with Parkinson's disease can blink per minute . But if you notice that you blink less often than usual, you should consult a doctor,” the foundation employees advised.

Also, the Parkinson's Foundation named other changes in the state of the body that may indicate an incurable brain disease:< /p>

  • tremor,
  • slowed movement,
  • muscle stiffness,
  • impaired posture (a person leans forward with his body),< /li>
