Easter 2024: what is strictly forbidden to do and eat, the main traditions of the holiday
Already on Sunday, May 5, Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter. This event has certain rules and even prohibitions, as well as traditions.
During the writing of the material, sources were used: OCU website, “Channel 24”, Church calendar, Wikipedia, VisitUkraine, interviews Metropolitan Oleksandr of the Pereyaslavsky and Vishnevsky OCU to the “Telegraph” publication.
The main traditions of Easter
Easter baskets are traditionally consecrated on this day, in which believers usually put Easter eggs, scrambled eggs and lard, cheese and other products. This happens after the service, which lasts all night, in the morning.
It is believed that all consecrated products and things receive special power. Easter was preceded by Great Lent, and therefore believers traditionally talk on the holiday. They eat exactly those products that have been consecrated in the church. But the meal begins only after the prayer.
It is believed that the egg should be eaten first. And then you can treat everyone else.
Also, on Easter, people greet each other in a special way. Instead of “good afternoon” they say “Christ is Risen!” And in response to this they say the following words: “He is truly risen!”.
What is forbidden to do on Easter
There are many prohibitions on Easter. In particular, on the holiday you should not:
- quarrel and curse
- arrange cleaning and do housework
- divine
- sewing, knit
- overeat and be lazy

What can not be celebrated and eaten on Easter
You should not put blood in the Easter basket, because the church does not approve of the consecration of dishes with blood. Also, you should not consecrate alcohol, except kahor. It is also worth refraining from drinking alcoholic beverages. Of course, it is about everything that is not kahor.
On Easter, you should not celebrate various dishes, such as soups, borschts and salads. You can prepare appetizers and side dishes for the festive table, but you do not need to put them in the basket.
Is it worth giving gifts on Easter
There is an opinion that something should be given on this holiday. However, the church refutes this tradition.
There is no such tradition. People simply go to visit each other, greet with the words “Christ is risen – He is truly risen.” Well, they exchange Easter eggs and Easter eggs. And gifts can be given every day. That is, there is no tradition of gifts before Easter, Metropolitan Pereyaslavskyi and Vishnevskyi said.
