Eating certain fruits reduces the risk of bowel cancer

Every year, millions of people suffer from colon cancer. However, there are ways to prevent it – for example, with the help of diet, as a new study shows. Certain types of fruit reduce the risk.
Studies show that various lifestyle habits greatly affect the risk of colon cancer. In addition to sufficient physical activity, diet can also significantly affect the risk of the disease.
Studies show that, above all, it is recommended to consume enough fiber. A high proportion of fruits and vegetables in the diet and a low proportion of red meat and meat products also have a positive effect.
Does fruit consumption affect the risk of colon cancer?
The effect of consuming individual types of fruit on the risk of colon cancer has now been studied in a meta-analysis. 24 observational studies from medical and scientific databases were selected for the analysis.

To find out whether consumption of a particular type of fruit affects colon cancer risk, the risk of colon cancer in the group of study participants who consumed the least amount of each type of fruit was compared with the group who consumed the highest amount.
“The meta-analysis showed that consumption of some of the included fruits was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer. Increased consumption of citrus fruits, apples, watermelons and kiwis was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer compared with consumption of low amounts,” says the oncologist.
High consumption
- Citrus fruits: 9% risk reduction.
- Apples: 25% risk reduction.
- Watermelon: 26% risk reduction.
- Kiwi: 13% risk reduction.
But why? On the one hand, a reduction in the risk of colon cancer can be achieved by improving gut health due to vitamin and fiber intake.
“According to the authors, this effect could also be due to the potential chemopreventive action of various plant ingredients, such as B. Nobiletin or naringenin, which are found, for example, in citrus peels.”
Chemoprevention refers to taking medications to prevent certain diseases.
