Eating one simple product increases the risk of dementia

Spicy food lovers may be at higher risk of dementia , than those who prefer softer food. It turned out that a simple chili pepper can have a negative effect on the brain. Although this ambiguous product is able to use some human organs and systems, its use is also associated with memory decline.

A study by the University of South Australia, published in the journal Nutrients, showed a faster decline in cognitive functions and memory in those people who ate more than 50 g of chili pepper per day. The risk of brain health deterioration was almost doubled.

In the experiment, which lasted 15 years, 4,582 Chinese people aged 55 and over participated. They ate chili both fresh and in the form of a spice. During the study period, the participants underwent surveys aimed at identifying cognitive impairments. In addition, they self-assessed how their memory changed with chili consumption.

“In our previous research, chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure. However, in this study, we found an adverse effect on the cognitive functions of the elderly,” said one of the authors of the study, Dr. Zumin Shi.

In addition, the work revealed that memory decline and the increase in dementia risk was even greater in lean people. Scientists believe that an overweight person is less sensitive to the consumption of chili pepper, hence the smaller effect on memory.
