Ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of bowel cancer in men.
It is well known that our diet plays a huge role in our health food and well-being. Often, not eating enough of certain foods can lead to noticeable deficiencies, while too much of others can cause weight gain and problems like high blood pressure. Now scientists have shown that what you eat can have far-reaching and potentially fatal consequences.
The disease, also known as colorectal cancer, is the fourth most common type of cancer, accounting for 11 percent of new cancer cases. It is the second leading cause of death from cancer.
Men who ate a lot of highly processed foods had a 29% higher risk of bowel cancer than men who ate much less. However, the same relationship was not found among women. Colorectal cancer may be the cancer most affected by diet versus other cancers. The strongest association between the disease and ultra-processed foods among male participants was found with animal products.
These foods include some processed meats such as sausages, bacon, ham, and patties.

High consumption of sugary drinks, such as sodas and fruit drinks, was also associated with a higher risk of bowel cancer among men, but not all processed foods appeared to be equally harmful.
