An increase in waist size of only 1 cm increases the risk of serious heart problems by 5%. This was the conclusion of Oxford University researchers.
If you carry a few extra pounds around your waist, this is not just a sign that you need to go on a diet and exercise more often. Research has shown that excess belly fat is a warning sign of an increased risk of heart failure.
Each new centimeter added to your waist increases your risk of this incurable cardiovascular disorder by 5%.
The authors of the study analyzed data on 430,000 Britons aged 40 to 70 years. They were observed for an average of 13 years. Each centimeter above the waist circumference, which is considered healthy, increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes or arrhythmia.
Owners of the largest waist circumference were 3.21 times more likely to encounter cardiovascular pathologies than those who had this the volume was the smallest.
But the owners of the highest risk were only 2.65 times more likely to suffer from heart disease, compared to those who had the least weight. This indicator was calculated based on the body mass index.
Therefore, the risk of cardiovascular complications does not depend so much on excess weight as on waist size. During the study, 8,669 cases of heart failure were recorded, and many of them ended in the death of the patients.
