Every fourth doctor suffers from mental health problems

Stress due to stressful work leads to depression, anxiety and alcoholism. And this increases the danger for patients.

The British Medical Association conducted a survey of more than 4,300 doctors, which gave bleak results. It turned out that stress due to a busy work schedule and constant emotional stress pushes many medical professionals to depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. Doctors resort to the latter in the hope of relaxing. Doctors themselves, of course, need to know better than anyone else that alcohol does not provide such relief from stress, but in reality only worsens the situation, because its relaxing effect is short-lived, and the negative impact persists for many years.

27% (!) of doctors who took part in the survey have already received official diagnoses related to mental disorders from psychologists and psychiatrists. One can only imagine the percentage of those who have not yet heard this diagnosis. 40% of doctors face serious psychological and emotional problems that affect them in a destructive way. At the same time, female doctors suffer more than male doctors.

The study also showed some obvious facts. For example, a working week of more than 51 hours greatly increases the risk of emotional problems in doctors. The authors of this study say that a very alarming crisis is developing in the UK public health system with doctors' psychological health. It poses serious problems for patients as well.
