German scientists found that 10% of the population has an addiction before work. It manifests itself in different ways – from doing several things at the same time and overtime and long work shifts, and even feeling guilty during periods of rest.
A third of the entire workforce in Germany faces regular overwork, and another 10% demonstrate real mental addiction to work or workaholism, as the study of local scientists showed.
For the first time, they studied the behavior of typical workaholics across all sectors and found that this phenomenon is widespread.
They conducted interviews with eight thousand employees throughout Germany. In addition, meetings with them were held even before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which significantly affected the balance between work and personal life.
It was established that 9.8% of people demonstrate true addiction and compulsive behavior in relation to work. Another 33% face regular revisions, but not because of any addiction, but as a result of a busy work schedule. The majority of respondents, or almost 55%, have a more relaxed attitude to work.
At the same time, women are workaholics somewhat more often than men – 10.8% versus 9%. At the same time, young people aged 15 to 24 showed a strong psychological dependence on work more often than representatives of the age group from 55 to 64 – 12.6% versus 7.9%. As for specific professions, various types of managers and supervisors, as well as the self-employed, most often became workaholics.
