Exhaust gases are more dangerous for women

A study shows that car exhaust gases pose an increased risk for the fair sex. They increase the level of proteins that lead to calcification of arteries.

Everyone knows the danger to the environment and human health posed by car exhaust gases. Therefore, every year the environmental regulations in the European Union and Western countries regarding car exhaust are getting stronger.

And now a study has shown that exhaust gases affect women more pronounced and negatively than men. In the experiment, 5 men and 5 women inhaled exhaust gases from an engine that ran on diesel fuel. The experiment was conducted three times a month, only the concentration of this diesel fuel varied.

Researchers from the University of Manitoba found that exhaust gases increase the level of proteins associated with cardiovascular diseases. It is these proteins that affect the hardening or calcification of arteries. However, this process is more pronounced in women than in men.

In both sexes, the researchers found changes in blood components associated with inflammation, infection, and cardiovascular disease, but in women, this level of proteins was significantly higher. And it can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

However, the study was very small in terms of the number of participants, and no clear conclusions can be drawn yet. However, there is some evidence that women are more susceptible to respiratory infections and asthma, and have a higher immune response to substances that irritate their airways, such as house dust.
