Experts explained which women have increased bone fragility

Premenopausal women with chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have systemic bone fragility in peripheral areas, according to the study.
Dr. Mariana O. Pérez of the University of São Paulo in Brazil and her colleagues investigated the relationship between parameters of systemic and localized bone damage in 80 premenopausal women with long-term RA (median 9.8 years).
Researchers found that trabecular, cortical, and bone strength parameters in the distal part of the radius and tibia were impaired in patients with RA compared to with healthy women from the control group. Bone erosions were observed in three quarters of female patients, and osteophytes in 41.3%.
In both the distal radius and tibia, lower mineral density and higher porosity were observed in patients with erosions .
Osteophyte volume in the distal radius was positively correlated with trabecular bone mineral density, trabecular number and stiffness, and negatively correlated with trabecular separation.
“These the results showed that premenopausal women with long-term RA have bone disorders of the cortical and trabecular departments,” the authors note.
