According to the National Institute on Aging (NIH), one of the key habits of long-lived people is to independently perform routine tasks that require physical activity.
Experts note that a long life can only be enjoyable if a person is in good enough health to enjoy it. NIH experts have named four key habits that not only increase the chances of becoming a long-liver, but also contribute to healthy aging.
Physical activity. Scientists state that regular sports and physical exercise reduce the risk of diseases and disabilities that often occur with age.
- Balance exercises help prevent falls, which are the main cause of disability in old age.
- Strength training helps build muscle and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
- Stretching exercises are useful for maintaining flexibility.
In addition to training, daily activities that keep a person mobile are very beneficial.
“Daily activities – for example, walking, gardening, taking the stairs instead of the elevator – can significantly affect your health in the long term,” the researchers note.
Maintaining a healthy weight. The habit of keeping yourself in good shape protects against obesity, which is a trigger for diseases that shorten life. Obese people are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.
Foods with a low glycemic index. Food plays an important role in aging. It has been found that long-livers actively consume cereals with a high fiber content, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and legumes. These products usually have a low glycemic index, which helps curb excessive appetite and stabilize blood sugar levels.
“Nutrients obtained through proper nutrition help keep muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of the body strong throughout life,” say experts from the NIH.
Activities that you enjoy. Scientists also included “passion for activities that you enjoy, that bring you pleasant emotions, and psychological comfort” in the list of key habits of longevity. Long-livers almost always have hobbies.
