According to the British Heart Foundation, diseases of the heart and circulatory system claim millions of lives every year. Research has identified one particular food group that can increase the risk of death from heart disease by 40 percent.
A recent study highlighted that ultra-pasteurized food poses a higher risk of death from heart disease in people with a history of heart attacks.
Cardiovascular diseases are usually associated with blood clots or the accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries. The study found that ultra-pasteurized food may increase the risk of death from all causes in people with heart disease.
The study used the NOVA classification to define ultra-processed foods, which describes this type of food using many ingredients, including food additives, processed raw materials and ingredients rarely used in the home kitchen.
Processed raw materials range from hydrogenated fats to modified starches, while rarely used ingredients were defined as soy protein or meat that subjected to mechanical separation.
Following a diet consisting of such products is a high risk factor for people with heart disease. Adherence to this diet is a “serious public health problem.” This means that if you fall into the heart disease category, you can switch to a healthier diet. Other ways to prevent heart disease are from exercise to reducing alcohol consumption.
