The health of your hair depends on what's going on in your body as a whole. If you notice minor changes, such as changes in texture or color, the problem lies in the roots. Especially if this is accompanied by shedding. There are at least six common causes of hair loss in women that can be diagnosed with a blood test.
According to the Mayo Clinic, most people lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs a day, but if your hair seems to be thinning , it could be a sign of male or female pattern hair loss, a genetic condition called alopecia areata. People with this condition lose more than the average amount of hair and it does not grow back quickly.
“If the hair follicles are the same size or if the loss occurs suddenly, it's probably not genetic,” says Wendy Roberts, MD, dermatologist.
She explains that some of the most common causes of hair loss in women include:
- pregnancy;
- thyroid disease;
- anemia;
- autoimmune diseases (including psoriasis);< /li>
- polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS);
- certain skin conditions.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, many women who experience hair loss suffer alopecia areata, a genetic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. When this happens, the person begins to lose hair, often in tufts forming coin-shaped bald spots.
“Because there are so many causes of hair loss, sometimes testing is necessary to make sure that the cause is alopecia areata, – explains a member of the American Academy of Dermatology. – A blood test can detect other diseases caused by the immune system”.
