Pears and apples are mainly grown in gardens, at summer cottages, and near the house. Protecting trees and being sure that they will be able to survive the winter without losing fruiting is a strategic task. There are a number of procedures that every owner should know. Because their implementation and compliance with the rules of care will help increase frost resistance.
What needs to be done
Winter hardiness is a fairly broad concept, but it all comes down to the fact that a tree must withstand the influence of external factors. We are talking about temperature drops, cold, wind, snow, moisture. To increase winter hardiness, the following actions are required:
- planting varieties adapted to the region;
- if groundwater is close, trees are planted on elevated areas;
- fertilizing with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers at the end of summer;
- whitewashing and warming the trunks of young trees;
- moisture-charging watering is required in the fall;
- annual pruning of tree crowns.
Systematic and regular care for pear and apple trees will help improve the condition of trees and increase their winter hardiness. And this will have a positive effect on yield.
