Experts told why you can't squeeze a tea bag into a cup

Along with coffee, tea is considered the most popular drink in the world. Scientists do not get tired of talking about its useful properties, but emphasize that a lot depends on the cooking process. Those who prefer to brew tea in bags, squeezing them to the last drop, should be especially careful.

As experts explained, tea contains tannins. They are a class of polyphenolic molecules with binding properties that interact with proteins, polysaccharides, and other biopolymers. When brewing a tea bag, a small concentration of tannins enters the water, but most of them remain in the tea leaves. If the bag is squeezed, there will be too many tannins in the water, which will make the drink bitter.

According to scientists, a small amount of tannins cannot harm the body, but a large content of tannins can have a negative effect on health. . In particular, tannins can cause dehydration and bind some useful trace elements in the body, which blocks their assimilation. For example, according to a study published in Food Research International, tannins interfere with the absorption of iron by the body.

In addition, tannins impair the work of some enzymes and disrupt the functioning of the kidneys and liver. Some people may experience increased blood pressure and nausea after drinking strong tea. This applies to both black and green tea, and the concentration of tannins in the latter is several times higher.
