Fatty liver disease: the best foods to avoid serious disease

One of the main functions of the liver is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract before passing it on to other parts of the body. In addition, the liver neutralizes chemicals and digests drugs that the body takes. The liver, like all our most important organs, is something that we need to take care of. Sometimes, despite the best intentions, people can still develop fatty liver disease.
According to the British Liver Trust, there are two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The difference between the two is that one is caused by excessive alcohol consumption and the other is not, hinting at the fact that alcohol is not the only factor affecting a person's liver health. Diet also plays a big role.
There is one diet in particular, the Mediterranean diet, that may reduce the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD for short.
A study found that the Mediterranean diet diet is associated with lower liver fat.
About 1,400 participants aged 65 and older took part in the study. Other findings from the study included confirmation that abstaining from alcohol can reduce the risk of alcohol-related liver disease and that eating red meat was associated with higher levels of fatty liver.
White meat and proteins of plant origin can also have a positive effect on liver health.
