“Five-second rule”: is it okay to eat food that has fallen on the floor?

There is an opinion that a product that has fallen on the floor and has been there for less than five seconds can be eaten without any concerns. Is this true?

One awkward movement, and the sandwich instantly flies down, and we grab it in the hope that it has not had time to get dirty. Sounds familiar? Well, really, what can happen in a few seconds? According to popular belief, nothing – but only if you immediately pick up the food from the floor.

Where did the “five-second rule” come from?

It is not known for certain who first planted this idea in people’s minds. There is an assumption that it all started with the founder and first ruler of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan, who allegedly deliberately threw food on the floor, testing the assumption that any food prepared for him was safe.

20th century. Fans of the famous French chef Julia Child claim that during her master classes she deliberately threw a turkey on the floor and then cooked it in the oven.

And although this myth was later dispelled, the idea itself began to live a life of its own.

This is not the only safety rule that Mrs. Child often violated. Just remember her practice of washing chicken carcasses in the sink! Nowadays, such pre-preparation of meat causes numerous controversies.
