The appearance of bumps or a burning sensation, itching in the tongue are among the symptoms that should not be ignored – they should be examined by a doctor.
Bumps. British doctor Ross Perry said in an interview that the appearance of bumps on the tongue should not be ignored.
“Unusual bumps anywhere in the mouth should be checked by a dentist or therapist,” the expert noted.
The doctor clarified that it is unusual for formations that do not go away for months, especially if they bleed or ulcerate.
Burning tongue. Dr. Perry explained that you should not ignore a burning sensation in or on the surface of the tongue if it cannot be explained by some external factors.
“This may be due to a condition known as burning tongue syndrome, which should be checked by a therapist. Sometimes burning can indicate low iron levels or a deficiency in vitamin B12.”
Itchy tongue. According to the doctor, itching on the tongue and white spots can be symptoms of oral thrush – an infection that cannot be ignored, it should be treated. White spots that appear on the tongue can also be a sign of other diseases, and if they do not disappear, it is important to check them with a therapist, to clarify the problem that caused them.
White tongue. This condition of the tongue can be caused by a pathology called lichen planus. In severe cases, it can last for several years, and therefore it is better not to delay a visit to the doctor. “A white tongue can also occur when taking certain medications, and burning can sometimes indicate low iron levels or B12 deficiency.
Keratinized areas. Their appearance on the mucous membrane of the tongue can indicate the development of leukoplakia. The doctor advises never to ignore such a change in the condition of the tongue, but to consult a specialist. With this disease, there is a small risk that over time it may develop into oral cancer.
