At first glance, buying an orchid in a store is the easiest. There are many specimens on the shelf that bloom and can thereby divert attention from hidden problems. Whoever knows the rules for choosing a healthy and beautiful plant buys the best one the first time.
Criteria for choosing an orchid
When buying an orchid, the first thing that attracts attention is the color of the flowers and the size of the plant itself, the shade of the leaves. When the first stage of inspection has passed, you can proceed to the next one – to control the root system.
The substrate in the pot must be clean. It is not allowed to have mold in it. Even a minimal one is dangerous for an orchid. The correct substrate is bark with large fractions and a very small amount of sphagnum. The pot is transparent.
Leaves are a sign of health. Buy an orchid only with green, strong, dense leaves with a shiny surface. If there are spots, certain wrinkles, yellowing, dry ends or other suspicious signs of disease, look for another plant.
The roots of a healthy plant are strong, white or yellowish in color. After moistening, it is light green. If dark roots are visible, this may indicate rot. You definitely shouldn't buy such a plant.
Orchids are often sold already with flower stalks. This means that the plant is already formed. There will be no more upward growth. Experts recommend giving preference to those specimens that have flowers and formed buds. The stem should be straight. If it is crooked, it means that the plant has been growing for a long time in a room with insufficient ventilation and fresh air. An orchid is ideal for purchase if it is proportionately equal.
