Innovative methods of cancer treatment are already on the horizon, but prevention is always more important than cure. All hope is not lost on this front. Numerous studies conducted over the years have shown how you can reduce the risk of cancer by improving your diet. This is partly due to research showing that certain foods can increase the risk of developing a fatal disease.
A study by the Center for Epidemiological and Statistical Research (CRESS) evaluated the putative links between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and the risk of developing cancer.
For the study, researchers analyzed data on 104,980 participants aged at least 18 years (mean age 42.8 years) from the French NutriNet-Sante cohort.
The study NutriNet-Sante was organized to study the relationship between nutrition and health. Food intake data were collected using repeated 24-hour food records designed to record participants' usual intake of 3,300 different foods.
Associations between ultra-processed food intake and risk of overall cancer, cancer breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers.
What did the researchers find?
Consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with a higher overall risk of cancer and risk of breast cancer.
“These results remained statistically significant after adjusting for several markers of nutritional quality of the diet. Refined foods are made mainly from substances extracted from food products, such as fats, starches, added sugars and hydrogenated fats,” the researchers write.
