Foods that promote bone health in obese adults

According to with a new study, eating vegetables doesn't just have short-term health benefits.

Eating an extra 270g of vegetables a day for eight weeks was associated with improved bone health and lower biomarkers of poor health bones The exact mechanism is unknown, although researchers have suggested several possible causes.

The study participants were overweight and obese adults who ate less than one serving of vegetables per day.

Blood biomarkers for healthy bones were improved in the group consuming vegetables. The researchers determined an increase in bone resorption, the destruction of bone tissue with the release of accumulated calcium into the blood. Participants also noted an improvement in the state of the urinary tract, a decrease in the amount of acid in the urine.

“There are several potential reasons for this health benefit. One of the proposed mechanisms is to improve nutrition through vegetables that contain vitamins and minerals that can improve bone health,” says the first author of the study, JJ Cao.

Carotenoids, a group of antioxidants found in plants have been identified in previous research to improve bone health. Researchers found higher levels of carotenoids in blood plasma in people who ate vegetables.

There are many vitamins and minerals that have a positive effect on bone health. Vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium in the intestinal tract, increasing the amount available to the body.

A lack of calcium can cause the body to remove it from the bones to maintain the levels needed for nerve and muscle function.
