If you can't stop thinking about your ex, try playing the sounds in your sleep. Scientists from the University of York believe that this method completely gets rid of unpleasant memories.
Everyone has things or people that we would like to forget. It can be some uncomfortable moment in life or a former romantic partner.
And now researchers have established that playing sounds to people during sleep will help them forget unpleasant memories. The team at York University hope their findings will pave the way for methods to weaken traumatic and intrusive memories.
This effect is likely due to some form of competition between interrupted memories. Yes, it is possible to take one aspect of a previous memory, such as the actual location where an event occurred, and associate it with a new event. 29 volunteers learned two pairs of words. For example, Harry Styles and bicycle as one pair, and bicycle and castle as another.
When training these pairs, they also heard the word bicycle played aloud. Then the participants fell asleep, and when they entered the phase of slow or deep sleep, they were played the word bicycle.
After waking up, a memory test was carried out, and people who did not hear these sounds retained the memory of their pair, and volunteers forgot the association with another pair after playing the sounds in a dream.
