Names are not just a set of sounds. They carry a deep meaning that has been formed over the centuries. Ukrainian names are particularly rich in history and symbolism.
Some of them go back to the ancient Slavic era, preserving the wisdom of their ancestors. Let's consider a few such names that are still popular in Ukraine.
Volodymyr is a name consisting of two parts: “possess” and “peace”. It means “lord of the world” or “one who owns peace.” This name was borne by many outstanding rulers of Kyivan Rus, in particular Volodymyr the Great. It is widespread throughout the territory of Ukraine (a little less recorded in Zakarpattia Oblast). According to the genealogical society “Ridny”, 1,168,901 of its carriers are registered on the territory of our country.
Alexander comes from the Greek name Alexandros, which means “protector of people”. This name was popular among Macedonian kings, the most famous of whom was Alexander the Great. It is much more popular in Ukraine than Volodymyr. 1,573,883 of its carriers are registered in Ukraine. The fewest representatives are in the West of Ukraine. The further to the East, the more Sashki live.
The name Bohdan consists of the words “God” and “dan”, that is, “given by God”. It originated as a Slavic counterpart to the Greek name Theodore. One of the most famous bearers of this name was Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. Widespread primarily in Western Ukraine. There are 123,280 registered bearers of it, so the name Bohdan cannot be called common.
Yaroslav is a combination of the words “fierce” (strong, energetic) and “glory”. The meaning of the name can be interpreted as “one who has great (great) fame.” Yaroslav the Wise is one of the most famous Kiev princes, bearer of this name. Regarding its spread on the territory of Ukraine, the situation is the same as with Bohdan. First of all, this is Western Ukraine. 125,247 of its carriers are officially registered.
