If daily with “eat avocados for six months, it will help lower cholesterol. This was the conclusion reached by a joint team of scientists from several US universities.
She conducted a six-month experiment. More than 1,000 people who were overweight or obese participated in it. Half of the participants ate one avocado every day. The other half followed their usual diet, consuming the fruit up to twice a month. All of them had body fat and waist circumference measured before and after the study.
As the scientists note, eating one avocado a day did not lead to a clinically significant reduction in abdominal fat and other cardiometabolic risk factors. But it didn't cause an increase in body weight or waist circumference.
Also, daily avocado consumption was associated with a 2.9 mg/dL reduction in total cholesterol. The level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased in the participants of this group by an average of 2.5 mg/dL. One of the authors of the study, nutritionist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania Penny Chris-Etherton, calls such results “important for improving health”.
Researchers noted that the group that consumed avocados followed a higher quality diet. “This is important: we know that a higher quality of diet is associated with a lower risk of a number of diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer,” says Christina Petersen, co-author of the study, associate professor of dietetics at Texas Tech University.< /p>
