Doctor Herbert Shtanov, who represents the Federal Association of Permanent Cardiologists in Germany, told in an interview what actually harms the heart and what protects it.
The conversation with the cardiologist was published by a German publication, in which he called “the biggest mistakes » about heart health.
Coffee increases blood pressure and damages the heart. The doctor states that this is not the case. According to the specialist, caffeine can cause some increase in blood pressure only in people who are not used to drinking coffee, but this reaction does not last long. Staniv considers the amount of up to four cups a day harmless even for people with hypertension and reminds: drinking coffee reduces the risk of dementia and diabetes.
Red wine protects the heart. According to Herbert Brook, this is one of the biggest misconceptions about heart health. He emphasized that the available data show that “even a small amount of alcohol increases the risk of atrial fibrillation”.
Atherosclerosis is a problem of the elderly. This is not so. The doctor noted that atherosclerosis, in which calcium and fat deposits accumulate on the walls of blood vessels, causing impaired blood circulation and increasing the risk of heart attacks or strokes, can also develop at a young age. This is influenced by genetic predisposition, existing diabetes, smoking, obesity, inactivity.
The heart may not withstand strong stress. The cardiologist confirms: it can. According to him, “if in an acute stressful situation, the body releases an extremely large amount of adrenaline, it can cause a fatal cardiac arrhythmia”.
In most cases, this happens if there are already some heart health disorders. In women over 50, the hormones adrenaline and cortisol released during stressful events can contribute to the development of a broken heart syndrome with symptoms resembling a heart attack.
Drinking tap water harms the heart with its lime. This is a mistake, says the German expert. Lime from drinking water does not accumulate in the body. Hard deposits in blood vessels, which are observed in atherosclerosis, are not the cause of the disease, but its consequence. Lime water from the tap contains a lot of calcium and is useful in this regard, helping the body meet the daily need for a mineral important for health.
The older a person is, the weaker the heart becomes. Also a mistake! A cardiologist stated that
“a person who does not smoke, has normal blood pressure and does not have diabetes can have a healthy heart even in old age or perform better than younger people with these risk factors ».
Aspirin helps prevent heart attacks and strokes. The preventive effect of acetylsalicylic acid against heart attacks and strokes is viewed with caution in cardiology, Herbert said. He recalled that the current recommendations of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) do not recommend low doses of aspirin for patients who do not suffer from diseases of the cardiovascular system. For those who have them, this drug can be taken to prevent the formation of blood clots.
