Good or bad: how different foods affect the thyroid gland

The thyroid gland secretes T3 and T4 hormones, which control the metabolism of every cell in the human body. Certain foods can affect the production of these hormones.
There are foods that are harmful to the thyroid gland. These include:
- cabbage. Common and cauliflower, broccoli contain substances that can reduce the level of T3 and T4, especially if they are raw;
- soy products. Contains isoflavones that inhibit the production of thyroid hormones;
- fatty and fried products;
- gluten. May impair absorption of nutrients and cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract in those who are sensitive to this substance. Some people with hypothyroidism also have a high risk of celiac disease. They should avoid gluten completely;
- coffee. Addiction to caffeine has a detrimental effect on the thyroid and adrenal glands. It blocks the absorption of hormones;
- sugar. Excessive sugar consumption interferes with the proper functioning of T4;
- alcohol. It can inhibit the thyroid gland's ability to produce hormones.
But there are substances and foods that support healthy thyroid function:
- protein: meat, chicken, seafood and beans (simmered);
- selenium: Brazil nuts, liver, fish and garlic;
- magnesium: dark leafy greens, almonds, pecans and flax seeds;< /li>
- vitamin B12: grass-fed meat, chicken, eggs, and wild-caught seafood;
- iodine: seafood and algae;
- iron: grass-fed beef, organic beef liver, spinach and sardines;
- zinc: meat, chicken, seafood and almonds;
- vitamin B2: meat, offal , almonds and green vegetables;
- vitamin D: sunlight, egg yolks, liver and fish;
- omega – 3 fatty acids: fish, walnuts, chia and flax seeds;< /li>
- Vitamin C: citrus fruits and berries;
- vitamin A: eggs, green vegetables and liver.
