Harmful habits that destroy eye health

Ophthalmologists told which habits should be abandoned in order to maintain eye health. According to experts, the worst effects on the quality of vision include the refusal of sunglasses, improper diet and computer work.

Too much sun

A large amount of sun harms not only the skin, but also the eyes. “We all know the importance of sunscreen, but many people don't take into account the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on our eyes,” said ophthalmologist Trevor Elmquist. The doctor advised wearing wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking contact lenses, and tight-fitting sunglasses. When buying the latter, Elmqvist recommended choosing only those models that protect against both UVA and UVB radiation.

The wrong diet

The diet plays a big role in eye health. To maintain good eyesight for a long time, doctors recommend reducing the consumption of refined and processed foods and increasing the amount of vegetables, fruits, berries, fish, lean meat and whole grains.

Eye Rubbing Habit

If you rub your eyes too often, you can damage the small blood vessels under the skin, leading to dark circles and puffiness, warned Anthony Cowrie, MD. In addition, this habit provokes premature aging of the skin around the eyes, the formation of wrinkles and drooping of the eyelids.

Many gadgets

Frequent use of mobile phones, computers and tablets can lead to eye strain, warned ophthalmic surgeon Ming Wang. Over time, this can lead to myopia, which is one of the most common causes of irreversible vision loss. If you have to spend a lot of time in front of a PC monitor because of work, it is important to periodically give your eyes a break, the doctor added. Experts also advise to periodically do special exercises. One of the most effective is “20-20-20”: every 20 minutes you need to take a 20-second break and focus on an object that is 20 feet (six meters) away.
