Many factors increase the risk of heart disease: genetics , improper nutrition, bad habits, lack of physical activity and other diseases. However, the risk factors also include the deficiency of one important element, the scientists found out.
According to the study published in the journal of the European Society of Cardiology, we are talking about iron. Iron is responsible for many processes in the body, including the delivery of oxygen to the organs, metabolism, regulation of respiration.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between iron deficiency, cardiovascular diseases and mortality in the general population A total of almost 12,200 people took part in the study. Their average age was 59 years. Experts took into account age, smoking, data on total cholesterol, body weight, the presence or absence of diabetes.
It turned out that functional iron deficiency was reliably associated with mortality from all causes, with cardiovascular mortality , as well as with the occurrence of coronary heart disease. “Functional iron deficiency is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the general population,” experts concluded.
According to the Mayo Clinic, iron-rich foods include:
- red meat, pork and poultry;
- seafood;
- beans;
- dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach;
- dried fruits;
- iron-enriched cereals, bread and pasta;
- peas.
