Hidden signs of vitamin B12 deficiency revealed

With age, the risk of suffering from the consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency becomes more significant.

Vitamin B12 plays an important role in many functions of the body, including brain function. Its deficiency is a serious disorder, the consequences of which can be psychoneurological disorders, problems with appearance.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among young people and especially common among people over 60. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less stomach acid and intrinsic factor, which are necessary for the absorption of B12 from food.

The nutritionist also named the hidden signs of the problem.

Cognitive impairment. The brain and neurons need vitamin B12, and its deficiency contributes to difficulties with thinking and concentration. Long-term B12 deficiency increases the susceptibility to dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Slow metabolism.Vitamin B12 helps the body metabolize food, break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and produce energy. Accordingly, its deficiency provokes fatigue and weakness, as well as rapid weight gain, which is difficult to get rid of.

Bad mood and sleep. Since B12 plays a “huge role” in the production of serotonin, a deficiency of the vitamin can contribute to the development of symptoms of bad mood, sleep disorders, and depression.

Weak immune system. Frequent infections are another hidden sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is necessary for the body to produce white blood cells, which ensure the optimal functioning of the immune system. The lower the level of B12 in the blood, the worse it is at repelling attacks by viruses and other pathogens.

Pale skin, brittle nails, gray hair. A lack of vitamin B12 can cause anemia, which is characterized by pale skin, early or severe graying of hair. Another sign that the body is lacking this important vitamin is the deterioration of the condition of the nails – they appear pale, weak and curved.
