High cholesterol: 6 visible signs on the legs will indicate the condition

High blood cholesterol is a precursor to serious health problems, which usually have no warning signs. However, there are six signs your feet may show that indicate a dangerous condition.

Like high blood pressure, high cholesterol doesn't cause many warning signs. A dangerous substance in your blood can slowly build up and narrow your arteries. However, the condition of your feet may hold some clues.

For example, according to therapist Sarah Jarvis, one of the signs of high blood cholesterol can be swollen feet. However, according to the doctor, this sign is associated only with familial hypercholesterolemia. Familial hypercholesterolemia is an inherited condition in which genetic damage causes high blood cholesterol.

However, it is not the only clue in your feet that can indicate high blood cholesterol. Another sign that may appear in this area is related to a condition called peripheral artery disease caused by high blood cholesterol.

Visible signs may include:

  • hair loss on legs;
  • brittle, slow-growing toenails;
  • leg ulcers that do not heal;
  • skin discoloration on the legs, for example, pale or blue;
  • shiny skin.
