High cholesterol: a symptom on the skin will warn of problems with blood vessels

With an increased level of cholesterol, an excess of this substance begins to accumulate in the walls of blood vessels, which complicates blood circulation and leads to various complications.
One of the most serious and dangerous are stroke and heart attack. Most often, there are no symptoms of high cholesterol, and you can find out about this condition only by taking a blood test. However, in some cases, a sign appears that will indicate a problem before going to the doctor.
These are xanthomas. These are soft, yellow growths on the skin that are caused by the deposition of cholesterol-rich material. As a rule, their size varies from several millimeters to several centimeters in diameter.
As for the location of xanthomas, they can appear anywhere on the body. Most often, deposits are found on the elbows, joints, tendons, knees, hands, feet or buttocks.
According to doctors, the main reason for the formation of xanthomas is cholesterol deposits in the walls of blood vessels. “Blood flow is difficult due to cholesterol, which can accumulate in the walls of blood vessels, making them thinner. In addition, an excess of the substance provokes the development of atherosclerosis, due to which arteries narrow and blood flow slows down,” the doctors added.
