To control the level of cholesterol in the blood, doctors first of all recommend adjusting the diet. It is especially important to minimize the consumption of harmful fats, which are considered one of the main culprits of the accumulation of this substance in the body. On the other hand, the amount of some products in the diet should be increased. For example, scientists recently discovered that Brazil nuts have a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels.
In the course of the study, experts came to the conclusion that the nut, which is rich in monounsaturated fats, has a unique hypolipidemic effect, which was observed within a few hours after its consumption. .
“Each subject was tested four times in a randomized cross-over study after consuming different portions of Brazil nuts: 0.5, 20 or 50 g,” the scientists noted.
Blood was taken from all volunteers. for analysis after one, three, six, nine, 24 and 48 hours of eating nuts, as well as after five and 30 days. The researchers analyzed the samples for total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoproteins (HDL and LDL), triglycerides, selenium, and other key indicators.
According to the results, a significant increase in plasma selenium levels was observed six hours after food LDL levels were significantly lower and HDL significantly higher nine hours after consuming 20 or 50 g of nuts.
In addition, a marked increase in HDL (by 32%) and a decrease in LDL ( by 23%) after 30 days of such a diet. As a result, the researchers came to the conclusion that consuming a portion of Brazil nuts can really improve the lipid profile of blood serum.
