Home heating: why you can't do it with gas burners

Due to the war started by the Russian Federation, hostilities continue in Ukraine. Enemy rocket attacks damage residential buildings and critical infrastructure facilities. Experts predict that the coming winter may be difficult.

Ukrainians have already started preparing for winter – warming their homes, stocking up on food. In the cold season, some use gas burners to heat the premises. The Facebook page of “Donetskoblgaz” explained why you should not “warm up” with a gas stove.

How dangerous is heating with a gas stove

Experts noted that during long-term use of a gas stove, the combustion of natural gas may be incomplete. As a result of this, there is an intensive emission of carbon monoxide in the room, which has a poisonous effect on the human body.

“The reason for this is either the ineffective operation of the ventilation system (tightly closed doors/windows/apartments) or its complete malfunction (closed ventilation ducts, clogged ventilation grills)”, the message says.

The completeness of gas combustion can be monitored by the color of the flame when using a gas stove:

  • The norm is blue -purple color;
  • Incomplete combustion – yellow-straw color.

Donetskoblgaz emphasized that carbon monoxide will accumulate in the air of the residence as a result of incomplete combustion (CO – carbon monoxide). Even if the concentration of this mixture in the room is only 0.1%, a person can lose consciousness and die within 2 hours.

“A concentration of 0.5% will lead to death in 30 minutes, and 1% carbon monoxide content in 2-3 minutes. If you detect the smell of gas, contact the emergency gas service by calling 104,” the experts summarized.
