Horikhovy Spas 2024: date according to the new calendar, traditions and prohibitions of the day

< p> Nut Savior is considered a holiday of harvest and hay harvesting. On this day, housewives baked bread from new grain, which was then consecrated. , after the end of the Assumption fast (August 14) and the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15). Before the transition to the new OCU calendar, this day was celebrated on the 29th.

The third Savior, also known as Cloth or Bread, got its name because the nuts begin to ripen by this date. Once upon a time, people baked bread from the wheat of the new harvest, which gave the name Khlibniy, and went to fairs, selling canvases, which explains the name Polotnyany. In the Orthodox tradition, on the day of Horikhovy Spas, the Transfer of the Immaculate Image of God to Constantinople is celebrated.

Traditions on the day of Horihovy Spas

There are various traditions and rituals that are celebrated on the day of Horihovy Spas in Ukraine and other Orthodox countries. Here are some of them:

  • Housewives baked pies and bread using flour from the fresh harvest. It symbolizes gratitude for the fruits of the earth and blessings for the coming year.
  • The Orthodox believe that it is necessary to buy some kind of cloth or towel on Horikhovy Spas. This is connected with the legend that on the towel with which Christ wiped his face, his face was reflected, and the cloth itself could heal the sick. A consecrated canvas can bring happiness to the owners.
  • Together with ready-made pastries and nuts, you should go to church to consecrate the products. This will give them special strength and blessing.
  • A folk omen indicates that on Horikhoy Spas you must have a festive dinner, inviting family and friends. The main dish can be nut pastries, as well as dishes with nuts.

What not to do on Horikhoy Spas

Tretii Spas (Horikhoy), like any holiday , surrounded not only by good traditions, but also by prohibitions. So, on the day of Nut Savior, you cannot:

  • quarrel, insult and be offended, slander;
  • throw food in the garbage (it is better to give it to animals);
  • refuse people help;
  • overeat despite the end of fasting;
  • any housework is prohibited on this day.
