Hot showering after a long day has many benefits: from relieving the stress of the day to relaxing the muscles. But hot showers can also have a negative impact on our health, doctors warn.
Everyone loves a hot shower or bath. It's a good way to relax and also has health benefits. For example, a study found that when participants took a hot bath, their postprandial peak blood sugar levels were about 10 percent lower than when they exercised instead.
A hot shower can also ease cold or respiratory symptoms. diseases, help with skin rashes and help sleep.
What is the danger?
Cosmetologist Rekha Taylor:
“ Short, cool showers are better for your skin because using too hot water can have a negative effect on your skin. Hot water damages the keratin cells located on the outer layer of the skin, or epidermis.”
Dr Sasha Dhoat, consultant dermatologist at Stratum Clinics, added:
“Avoid excessive showering or too hot water , which can dry out the skin and cause inflammation. The top layer of the skin, the epidermis, performs the vital function of the skin barrier; your body's first defense against the outside world.”
Dr. Dhoat also recommends showering for no more than 10 minutes. Patients who have problems with the skin barrier, such as those who suffer from eczema, are advised to reduce the time they take a shower or bath. “More than 15 minutes is too much for anyone”.
