How long can you use drops in the nose: a doctor's recommendation

Nasal congestion and runny nose are one of the most common symptoms of a cold, flu, or ARVI. The patient is prescribed nasal drops to constrict blood vessels and stop a runny nose. However, long-term use of such drugs can cause addiction, the general practitioner warns.
She explained that nasal drops should be used for a little more than 7-10 days. Then, habituation and atrophy of the nasal mucosa occur, due to which the vessels of the nasal cavity cease to contract on their own, and even after recovery, the person has difficulty breathing.
“This condition is called medication-induced rhinitis and requires long-term and difficult treatment,” the doctor added.
In addition, an overdose of nasal drops can lead to increased heart rate and increased blood pressure. Any drugs, even the simplest ones, should be prescribed by a doctor for illness, the doctor concluded.
The therapist added that uncontrolled use of antibiotics is also dangerous. Many people prefer to treat ordinary ARVI with antibacterial drugs, forgetting that such drugs affect bacteria, but not viruses or infections.
