Eggs are a nutrient-rich food that contains protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. But do you know how long they last?
Eggs have a shelf life of three to five weeks when stored in their intact shells and in a refrigerator at a temperature near freezing.
Before buying eggs, open the package and check for cracks in the shell. Even if you see microcracks, don't buy the product. Other visual signs that indicate a bad batch include a slimy or powdery surface.
You can also test the freshness of an egg by checking its buoyancy. If you see it float after carefully placing a raw egg in a bowl of cold water, it's likely old. To keep eggs fresher longer, take them home and refrigerate them as soon as possible after purchasing. Don't leave the product out at room temperature for two hours or more.
