The endocrinologist explained why elderly people need to exercise and how much protein they need to consume per day to preserve their muscles.
In particular, the specialist spoke about patients with sarcopenia. This is the name for age-related atrophic degenerative changes in skeletal muscles. People with this condition gradually lose muscle mass and strength.
“Along with effective regular physical activity, a balanced diet is important for patients with sarcopenia. A significant role is given to the correction of protein intake. According to several expert groups, the daily level of protein intake in healthy elderly people should be at least 1.0-1.2 g/kg of body weight per day.
Increasing protein intake to 1.0-1.5 g/kg of body weight per day is recommended for patients with senile asthenia syndrome with preserved kidney function (glomerular filtration rate or GFR not lower than 30 ml/min/1.73 m²), – said the doctor.
