How picking flowers affects potatoes
0
Potatoes, depending on the variety, bloom with white and purple flowers. Summer residents are divided into two types. Some pick them, while others do not touch them. Of course, we are talking about small areas, not hectares.
Details
Previously, flowers were picked because it was believed that flowering resulted in a weaker harvest.
In some regions of the country, this method showed a positive effect, but in the middle lane the result was negative.
Later, varieties were bred that produce fewer flowers. But summer residents still argue about the advisability of picking flowers. There are several arguments that explain why this issue is currently irrelevant and flowers should not be removed:
- Potatoes will still strive to produce new flowers after picking, so the fight may be delayed, because there are other troubles, including the Colorado potato beetle.
- The variety degenerates if flowers are constantly removed. Renewal is possible only through seeds, so the yield gradually decreases, and the tubers become smaller.
- Plucking flowers reduces the immunity of plants, increasing the risk of infection.
- The procedure is laborious and time-consuming.
