How to determine if the watermelon ripe and whether there is a difference between “boy” and “girl”

Many have heard that some gardeners distinguish watermelons by “gender”. For example, “boys” are larger, have an elongated shape and a less sweet taste. “Girls”, or as they are often called, “watermelons” have a rounded shape and very sweet. But it is completely wrong. All watermelons come from women's flowers, which have a small ovary at the base of the flower. There are no male watermelons because men's flowers are barren. The form of watermelon is determined by the watermelon variety. Round watermelon is not necessarily sweet.Gardeners assure that they determine whether the watermelon is mature, simply tapping on it with your fingertips or patting with your palm. This is a classic way to choose a beautiful watermelon. If the sound is low, deaf and deep, like a drum or a knock on the door, then the berry is ready. A tall, ringing sound indicates that the watermelon has not ripe. If you squeeze the watermelon with your hands, the ripe berry also gives out a characteristic crack. If the stain is white, then the watermelon has not yet reached the peak of maturity. However, such a test is not absolute because different growing conditions and different varieties of watermelons can give different colors.

Features of the skin
shiny lacquered surface is not too good for watermelon. In ripe watermelons, the green color of the peel becomes dull. On striped fruits, the color between the stripes becomes darker and the stripes are clearer rather than blurred. If you observe the development of the ovary, you will be able to say when a specific watermelon has become large enough and does not change significantly for some time. The number of days before ripening will give you an approximate estimate of the expected ripening time of the watermelon. If you are growing watermelon for the first time, you can check the expected size and term of ripening on the package and weigh it. Along with the place where the stem of your watermelon is connected to the main stem, there should be a small tendling. If this tendril is still green and elastic then the watermelon is still growing and torn it early.
