How to dry onions upside down for long-term storage
0
Preparing onions for storage begins immediately in the garden. After digging, they need to be dried. Ignoring this need leads to the appearance of rot. Digging also needs to be done carefully so as not to damage the neck and the onion itself.
Why onions are left in the garden
After digging, onions are left in the garden. This is necessary not only to prevent rot, but also for ripening. During the drying period, the nutrients that were in the stem will transfer to the root crop, which will give it better properties. In addition, this will make it more resistant to storage conditions.
How to make drying onions more effective
First of all, you need to focus on the weather conditions. Rain and dew contribute to the formation of rot, so the onions should be hidden under a cover. This will make the process faster and more efficient.
Take two long poles. The bulbs should be placed on them, but with the roots up. Arrange the onions, leaving gaps to ensure ventilation.
After drying is complete, the stem should be cut off. Leave small tails 3-4 cm long. For long-term storage, they should remain with a dry husk. Dried onions are transferred to a room with low humidity.
